The sitter is recorded only as B.Z. Mosessohn, and the Bain News Service supplied that name on the negative or its caption card without independent verification, so the identity and role of the man pictured remain open. The image survives as a small glass negative, a format the agency used heavily for quick news portraits. George Grantham Bain founded the service in New York around 1899 to sell pictures of people and events to newspapers, and its glass plates, now held by the Library of Congress, document the city's public life in the early twentieth century.
