The Crystal Palace was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851, a vast structure of iron and glass that housed exhibits from around the world and was later moved to Sydenham, south of London. This stereoscopic daguerreotype, made in the years between 1851 and 1860, shows the building as it stood in that decade, when it drew crowds and became one of the most photographed sights in England. The pairing of two nearly identical images was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, producing a sense of depth in the glass walls and iron ribs. Its handwritten note on the back, giving a price of $2.00, hints at how such views were sold to visitors and collectors.
