John F. "Honey" Fitzgerald, the mayor of Boston, stands at full length and faces the camera in a group that includes Braves catcher Hank Gowdy and a man identified only as Mr. Gaffney, taken on opening day of the 1914 World Series. That year the Boston Braves, who had sat near the bottom of the National League standings as late as July, surprised baseball by sweeping the favored Philadelphia Athletics in four games. The photograph came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold pictures to newspapers, so it reflects how eagerly the press covered both the Series and the city's rally behind its team.
