Its slogan ties three September returns together: back to work, back to school, and back to books. Printed in 1940 as a silkscreen poster under the Work Projects Administration's Federal Art Project, it belongs to a large body of public art the New Deal produced to promote education, reading, and community life during the Depression. The subject headings point to children and reading in Illinois, a reminder that these posters often used everyday scenes to encourage library use and learning. V. Donaghue's design also shows how silkscreen let the agency produce bold, inexpensive posters in quantity.
