Lighthouses are an unusual subject among the views of Philadelphia's 1876 Centennial, and this stereograph pairs one with a group of buoys. The card was issued around 1876 by the Centennial Photographic Company of Philadelphia, a firm that sold stereo views of the celebration held in Fairmount Park. Lighthouse and navigation displays were part of the government and marine exhibits at the exposition, where the U.S. Lighthouse Board showed lenses and related equipment. Viewed through a hand stereoscope, the two nearly identical images merged into a single scene with depth, which made objects like these buoys look solid and close at hand.
