The name Ensor sits beside a Paris address here: a December 1898 exhibition at the Salon des Cent, the gallery at 31 rue Bonaparte that showed avant-garde painters from Belgium and France. The poster is catalogued as a Brussels work from about 1896, two years before the Paris show, and its demon subject matches the masks, skeletons and grotesque crowds that run through Ensor's art. Ensor, a Belgian painter from Ostend, was still little known in Paris at that point, so posters like this one show how Symbolist-era artists used bold color and graphic design to carry their unsettling imagery into public view.
