Grasset's color poster advertises the Salon des Cent, an exhibition held in Paris in the mid-1890s, when lithographed posters were becoming a serious art form in the city. The record dates it to 1894 or 1895, though it notes that these dates come from an old caption card and have not been verified. Grasset, a Swiss-born designer who settled in France, was a leading figure in the decorative style of the period, and this piece shows his fondness for flat areas of color, stylized figures, and lettering worked into the composition. Posters like this one helped make the streets of Paris a showcase for graphic design.
