Lining the Seine embankments in Paris, the open-air book stalls, known as the bouquinistes, have sold secondhand books and prints from green wooden boxes bolted to the parapet for centuries. This glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress shows that trade as it was photographed in the early twentieth century, when the Bain News Service supplied newspapers with images of city life. The record gives no firm date, and its title comes from caption data the agency wrote on the negatives, so the exact year is unconfirmed. Still, the scene of stacked volumes and browsing customers along the river remains one of the city's most recognizable features.
