The Brooklyn Bridge and the Brooklyn shoreline it reaches toward share this view, with the East River running between them. The photograph is dated to about 1919 and was registered for copyright by Irving Underhill of New York City. Designed by John A. Roebling and opened in 1883, the bridge was a landmark steel-wire suspension span that linked Manhattan and Brooklyn for decades. The picture was made around the close of World War I, when the waterfront was still among the city's busiest working edges.
