This is the cover of sheet music for the song "All Hail to the Flag of Freedom," a color lithograph made by Ferd. Mayer & Co. of New York and published in Brooklyn by Skaats & Knaebel around 1861, the first year of the Civil War. Publishers sold patriotic songs like this one in large numbers during the war, and their covers often used bold flag imagery and figures of Union soldiers to draw buyers. Because the cover was meant to catch the eye in a shop window or on a parlor piano, it shows how the war was marketed to ordinary families at home.
