Among the many Civil War prints of this fight, this one stands out for the observation balloon drifting in the distance above the field. Tethered balloons were a novel tool in 1862, and the Union army used them to watch Confederate positions and track troop movements. The battle, fought May 31 and June 1, 1862, near Fair Oaks Station east of Richmond, was a bloody clash during McClellan's Peninsula Campaign. Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph the same year to meet public appetite for images of the war.
