Titled "Certain People of Importance," this 1936 silkscreen poster advertised a production sponsored by the Federal theater Project, a division of the Works Progress Administration that employed actors, directors, designers, and playwrights during the Depression. The record credits Arthur Arent, a playwright closely tied to the project's work. The silkscreen process, which WPA poster units used widely because it was cheap and allowed bold flat color, gives the design its strong shapes. A date stamp on the back reads September 7, 1939, the year Congress ended the Federal theater Project, so the sheet passed through the program's hands during its final months.
