This plate turns to the Williamsburg Bridge, which crosses the East River between the Lower East Side of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Opened in 1903, it was then the longest suspension bridge in the world, and it carried trolleys and foot traffic between two dense immigrant neighborhoods. Alvin Langdon Coburn, an American photographer who worked largely in Britain, made the photogravure for *New York*, published in London and New York around 1911.
