A shaded stretch of the Central Highway in Cuba, lined with royal poinciana and alamo trees, gives this photograph its particular character. The Central Highway, built in the 1920s and early 1930s, was meant to connect the island's towns and sugar regions, running the length of Cuba from Havana toward Santiago. Royal poincianas, prized for their feathery leaves and brilliant red-orange blooms in early summer, were widely planted along Cuban roads, so the tunnel of branches here shows how the planting softened the new road for travelers. The print comes from the Pan American Union's holdings, which gathered images of member nations for promoting inter-American understanding.
