Ten small cards on one sheet, each marking a different ballooning event, suggest a series meant for collectors to gather and compare. Ballooning was a French passion from the start: the Montgolfier brothers launched the first crewed hot-air balloon from Paris in 1783, and the city became a center for balloon ascents, races and public spectacles in the decades that followed. Collecting cards of this kind were often issued with food or tobacco products in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, using bright lithography to turn new technology into everyday entertainment. Looking closely at the individual scenes shows how the public imagined the sky as a new frontier.
