Few subjects suited the small format of a collecting card better than ballooning, and France is where the sport began. The Montgolfier brothers' hot-air balloon carried the first people aloft over Paris in November 1783, and balloons later carried mail out of the besieged city during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Cards like this one, issued in series and collected for their pictures, turned such moments into bright, pocket-sized scenes. Notice how the artist packs a dramatic event into a single small image.
