The title points to the Paris Exposition of 1867, the Exposition Universelle that filled the Champ de Mars that spring and summer with exhibits from many nations. Visitors came to see machinery, manufactured goods and the fine arts under the patronage of Napoleon III, and the grounds showcased how far industry and engineering had advanced. Because the gallery files this picture under ballooning, it is worth noting that Henri Giffard's captive steam balloon, which carried passengers above the fairgrounds, was one of the exposition's most talked-about attractions.
