The rudder and propellers of the SS Imperator, the Hamburg America Line liner, are the focus here, a close look at the machinery that steered and drove one of the largest ships of its day. Built at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg and launched in 1912, the Imperator was intended to compete for the Atlantic passenger trade with British rivals. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures from the early 1900s, and it shows the engineering behind a ship that later served as a troopship and then as the American transport USS Leviathan.
