The interior of the Library of Congress dome, photographed during construction on October 18, 1894, shows the building while its great central space was still taking shape. The Library's Main Building in Washington, D.C., was designed as a showpiece for the young federal library, and its dome rose above the reading room and the rotunda that was meant to impress visitors. Views like this one, made while the scaffolding and framing were still in place, record the stages of work on a structure that took several years to finish. The caption card is marked as unverified, so the exact vantage point and the workmen pictured are not confirmed here.
