This picture shows the gated outlet of Jackson Lake Dam, the structure that lets managers release stored water into the Snake River. The dam was built in the early 1900s by the U.S. Reclamation Service, which wanted to hold spring runoff in the lake and release it during the dry summer months. That stored water supported irrigated farms in the Snake River valley downstream, in southeastern Idaho. The gates show how the project turned a natural mountain lake into a working part of the region's agricultural water system, a change that still shapes the lake's levels today.
