Titled "The Life of a Sportsman: Coming into Camp," this lithograph shows the moment a hunting party arrives at its woodland base, a scene the title sets apart from the series' more general hunting and fishing views. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that printed inexpensive color lithographs for a broad middle-class market, issued many such sporting scenes in the decades after the Civil War. As city dwellers increasingly traveled to the Adirondacks and other northern wilderness areas for recreation, images like this one offered armchair access to the outdoor camp life they admired.
