Few Currier & Ives prints of the 1870s treat the outdoors as a holiday, but this 1879 lithograph, titled "Camping out: A life in the woods for me," does. The New York firm produced inexpensive lithographs for a broad public, and by the late 1870s many city dwellers were heading into the woods for weekends and summers. Recreational camping had grown popular after the Civil War, helped along by William H. H. Murray's 1869 book on camp life in the Adirondacks. The title's cheerful sentiment captures that appeal: a rustic escape from office and city life.
