Bocce, the Italian game of rolling heavy balls toward a small target ball, is the subject here, with the men shown at the moment of play. The Library of Congress dates the print only to a span between 1933 and 1967, when the game was a familiar pastime in Italian American neighborhoods, parks, and social clubs. Toni Frissell, known for her fashion and wartime photography, turned her camera to many everyday recreations, and her prints preserve a glimpse of informal leisure from that era.
