Football in 1916 was still a rough game, and this sepia photograph captures the scrum of players bringing one another down while a packed stadium looks on. The sport was in the middle of a period of heavy debate: college football had seen a string of injuries and deaths in the years before, and reformers pushed to open up the passing game and tighten rules on mass plays. Pictures like this one show why the game drew such crowds and why it seemed so dangerous to many observers at the time. Its sepia tone also places it firmly in the early decades of newsprint and tinted photographic prints.
