A young football player stands before Illinois Field, holding a ball and wearing a sweater marked with a large letter I, the university's initial. The poster is credited to Bristow Adams, and its title identifies the athlete in the way college sports promotions of the period often did. It was produced by Andrew B. Graham in Washington, D.C., around 1902, using photo-lithography, a method that combined a photograph with color printing to make an image that could be reproduced in quantity. Its cataloged purpose was promotional, which makes it a useful record of how college football was marketed to the public in the early 1900s.
