Cupid perches on a rosy cloud with a dove at his side and a spray of roses in his hand, a pairing that signals affection without any words needed. Postcards like this one, inscribed "To my Valentine," were a popular way to send sentiment in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when printers could reproduce color lithographs cheaply and sending a card through the mail was an everyday courtesy. The dove and roses were stock symbols of love and devotion, and the winged Cupid borrowed from classical mythology gave the card a playful, old-fashioned charm.
