Cupid is shown astride a white dove, a pairing that turns the usual image of the winged love god on its head, since the dove usually belongs to Venus rather than her son. Hearts and a sealed Valentine envelope surround the pair, two motifs that became standard in mass-produced cards in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Cards like this were often sent through the post or left by hand, and their printed sentiments let people express affection they might otherwise find hard to say aloud. Look closely at the envelope and the decorative border, which show how commercial printers adapted classical imagery for a sentimental audience.
