Cupid appears here as a chubby winged child, pictured beside an envelope inscribed "To my Valentine" and a scattering of hearts, a combination that ties the image directly to the custom of sending written messages of affection on February 14. Valentine cards grew popular in the United States and Britain during the nineteenth century, when printers began producing mass-made sentimental cards with lace, ribbons and romantic motifs. Cupid, the Roman god of desire, became the standard figure for these greetings, and his bow and arrows stood for love striking unexpectedly. Notice how the envelope suggests a letter being delivered, turning the card into a small story about courtship.
