Set on San Salvador Island in the Bahamas, this chromolithograph shows Christopher Columbus claiming the land for Spain, the moment tied to his first landfall in the Americas in October 1492. The Prang Educational Company of Boston issued it in 1893, the year Chicago hosted the World's Columbian Exposition marking four centuries since that voyage, and the firm was known for colored prints made for schools and homes. Chromolithography built the scene from several inked stones, one per color, which let publishers sell detailed pictures of national heroes at a price ordinary households could afford.
