Few buildings in Philadelphia drew as many tourists by the turn of the twentieth century as the small brick house on Arch Street where Betsy Ross, a local upholsterer, is said to have sewn an early American flag. Family tradition credits her with the design, a claim historians still debate. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company between about 1895 and 1910, records the house as visitors of that era would have seen it, with the horse-drawn carts and wagons common on the city's streets.
