Unlike the illustrated recruiting posters of the period, this one has no picture at all, only a block of bold text that opens with the single word "War." Its appeal rests on duty and home: Britons have never failed in their duty, and men are urged to enlist for the defence of their homes and country. Printed in 1915, it belongs to the voluntary recruitment drive Britain depended on before conscription began in early 1916. The wording presents enlistment as a continuation of national tradition rather than a new demand.
