Sestriere, a purpose-built ski resort high in the Piedmont Alps above Turin, is the subject that sets this poster apart from others on the winter theme. Mario Puppo designed it in 1935 for printing by Pizzi & Pizio in Milan, during the years when Italian travel posters often used bold flat color and stylized figures to sell mountain holidays. The resort was developed in the early 1930s under the sponsorship of Giovanni Agnelli, the Fiat industrialist, who wanted Italy to have a modern winter sports center to rival those across the Alps. The poster reflects that ambition, presenting skiing as a fashionable pastime for a growing middle-class audience.
