Few images in the Bain collection show Theodore Roosevelt in such an informal moment, cradling a small child rather than posing at a podium or desk. The record gives no date and notes that the title comes from unverified caption data supplied by the Bain News Service, so the exact occasion is unknown. The Bain News Service, run by photographer George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied news pictures to newspapers from the early 1900s onward, and its glass negatives were a common format for that work. Roosevelt, president from 1901 to 1909, was among the most photographed public figures of his era, and images like this one show how press photographers sought the personal side of political life.
