Percy Moran's painting shows the moment British General John Burgoyne handed over his army at Saratoga, in what is now upstate New York, on October 17, 1777. Moran, a Brooklyn painter known for historical scenes, depicted the surrender as a scene of formal ceremony rather than battle. This color halftone, registered for copyright around 1911, reproduces that work for wide circulation at a time when popular histories of the Revolution were often illustrated this way. The Saratoga victory mattered beyond the battlefield, because it persuaded France to enter the war as an American ally in 1778.
