Marking the first anniversary of the October Revolution, this chromolithograph bears the Russian title "One Year of Proletarian Dictatorship, 1917-1918" and was published in Soviet Russia in 1918 by VTSIK, the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the Soviets. Its allegory is direct: healthy, contented workers stand over broken chains beneath a rising sun that lights an abundant harvest and industrial growth. The artist signed only with the monogram MN, which the record does not identify. Posters like this one used bold color and easily read symbols to explain the new government to a population with limited literacy.
