Turkey-centered greetings like this one were a staple of the early twentieth century, when the picture postcard was at the height of its popularity in the United States. Thanksgiving had only recently become a fixed national holiday, observed on the last Thursday of November after Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, and card makers sold cheap, colorful reminders of the feast to families who sent them through the mail. The rhyming verse printed beside the bird was meant to be read quickly, so a card like this doubled as a pleasant little message and a small piece of seasonal decoration.
