Rather than a scene from the 1621 harvest feast, "A Fair Puritan" by E. Percy Moran is a genre portrait of a young woman in the plain dress and white collar associated with New England's Puritan settlers. Moran, a Brooklyn painter and son of the marine artist Edward Moran, built much of his reputation on idealized scenes of colonial American life. His work circulated widely as reproductions, and its nostalgia for the early colonial past helped shape how many Americans pictured the Pilgrims and Puritans. Viewed beside the Thanksgiving holiday, the picture shows how that heritage was imagined and sold to later generations.
