Paul Revere's likeness here is an engraving made in 1899 for the Society of Iconophiles of New York, a group devoted to fine portrait prints. The subject's dates, 1735 to 1818, frame a life spanning colonial Boston, the Revolution, and the early republic. Revere is best remembered for his midnight ride in April 1775, when he warned colonial militia that British troops were marching toward Lexington and Concord. Portraits of him from the nineteenth century often drew on his fame as a silversmith and patriot, and this print reflects the late-Victorian revival of interest in Revolutionary heroes.
