The Italian caption, *Forma il campo a valle-fucina*, translates roughly as "forms the camp at Valley Forge," so this print shows Washington organizing his army's winter encampment in Pennsylvania. The army spent the winter of 1777 to 1778 there, enduring cold, hunger and disease, but under the drilling of Baron von Steuben it emerged a far more disciplined force. The record gives no date, and the name C. Verico appears only on the shelflist card, so the print's maker and origin are unconfirmed. Its subject still marks a turning point in the war for American independence.
