Haverhill, Massachusetts, in 1893 was a river city on the Merrimack, and its fortunes rested largely on shoes. Factories and cutting rooms along the river and near the rail lines turned out footwear in volume, drawing Irish and French Canadian workers to crowded housing close to the mills. The Boston and Maine Railroad carried the finished goods to Boston and beyond, linking the city's shops to wider markets. Residents knew Haverhill as a shoe town, and its churches, schools, and civic life were shaped by the work that filled its streets each weekday morning.
