The French title, *Office de renseignements*, means "information office," and the name points to one of the counters that handled inquiries during the First World War. In 1915, families across France and beyond wrote, queued, and waited for word about relatives who were missing, wounded, or taken prisoner. Bureaus like this one tried to gather answers through military and Red Cross channels, and they became an essential part of the home front because official notices could not keep pace with the casualties. The scene is worth noticing for how much of the war's uncertainty fell on civilians rather than soldiers.
