This color halftone reproduces a Gilbert Stuart portrait of Thomas Jefferson that hangs at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Stuart was one of the most sought-after portrait painters of the early republic, and his likenesses of the founders became the images many Americans pictured when they thought of these men. The Forbes Litho. Mfg. Co., which holds the copyright noted on the print, issued this version around 1929, when printers were producing inexpensive color reproductions of famous American paintings for schools, homes and offices. Such prints carried Stuart's image of Jefferson far beyond the college's walls.
