Taken from beneath the arch, this view places the viewer inside the stone span of Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County, Virginia, rather than on the rim above. The limestone arch rises about 215 feet over Cedar Creek, and Monacan people regarded the site as sacred long before European settlers arrived. George Washington surveyed the property in 1750, and Thomas Jefferson described the bridge in his *Notes on the State of Virginia*. Although the gallery files it under the Blue Ridge Parkway, the bridge lies in the valley west of the Blue Ridge, not along the parkway itself.
