Hans Grade, the German engineer and pilot, gave his name to the Grade-Flieger, one of the monoplanes he designed and built himself in the years before the First World War. His early German-built machines were among the first aircraft of their kind to fly in Germany. This glass lantern slide, from the Hoernes collection and dated between 1904 and 1911, was made to be projected before audiences who were still getting their first look at flying machines. Its small glass format shows how aviation was taught and shown to the public in that period.
