Rather than a single landmark or event, this poster promotes a regional tour of art across New England, with Boston as its focal point for exhibitions in the late 1930s. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, put artists to work during the Depression, and its exhibitions brought painting, sculpture, and prints to towns that rarely saw such work. Silkscreen was a practical medium for the WPA's poster division, which could produce bold, inexpensive designs in quantity. The poster's color blocks and flat shapes reflect that method, and they show how the program used graphic design to publicize its cultural work.
