Few horses from the Civil War are as well known as Sorrel, the mount of Confederate general Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Jackson rode him through the Shenandoah Valley campaign and the battles of 1862 and 1863, and the horse became a familiar figure to soldiers on both sides. This print is a photograph of the animal itself rather than of its rider, which makes it a rare visual link to Jackson's campaigns. The record gives no date, so the image's exact age is uncertain, but its subject ties it to the years after Jackson's death at Chancellorsville in May 1863, when Sorrel was kept as a relic of the general's service.
