Orchard and Rivington streets sit in the heart of the Lower East Side, one of the most densely populated immigrant neighborhoods in Manhattan during the 1910s. Sunday was a busy day for the street markets there, when shoppers, vendors and families crowded the sidewalks and roadways. The Library of Congress catalogs the picture as dating from about 1915, though the exact day is uncertain. Scenes like this show how neighborhood commerce spilled out of storefronts and into the street, a pattern that defined the district for decades.
