Here, Uncle Sam, the figure James Montgomery Flagg made famous in his 1917 World War I recruiting poster, points a finger at the viewer and asks for Franklin D. Roosevelt's reelection under the line "Stay and finish the job!" The poster dates to 1944, when Roosevelt sought an unprecedented fourth term against Republican Thomas E. Dewey, and the wartime slogan argues against changing leaders while the fighting continued. Flagg reused his earlier design so viewers would recognize the appeal to duty at once. The poster's display in Berlin in 2007, in an exhibition on art and propaganda, reflects how durable its imagery has remained.
