Wide lawns fill the foreground of this 1937 panorama, with a large domed building rising above the trees on a New York City university campus. The dome sets this view apart from many campus scenes. Domed centerpieces were a favorite feature of Beaux-Arts planning in the early twentieth century, when American universities laid out formal quadrangles around a central monument. Panoramic cameras of the 1930s could capture such a sweeping scene in a single exposure, so the picture also records how an academic landscape looked just before the Second World War.
