Few American mines matched the Homestake, which worked gold-bearing rock beneath Lead in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This view captures the daily traffic of its shafts, with ore being hoisted up and miners being lowered down. The glass negative dates from between 1900 and 1910, when the Detroit Publishing Company was selling photographs of mines, towns and scenery to a national market. Scenes like this one show the machinery and labor that kept the mine running, and they offer a useful record of working life at the turn of the century.
